Tuck Everlasting Chap. 1 Cow Planet!
We've started reading Tuck Everlasting! We explored the motifs of wheels, threes and jails in the prologue. Chapter 1 can be a bit puzzling. Have you ever been on a tranqui bovine picnic? Is this book about cows? Don't worry, once the scene is set, the action will commence. But first, what visualizations, predictions and connections did you make? Did you have questions, inferences or predictions? Did you summarize or synthesize. Share your think alouds here! Don't forget to check back to see what others thought too. make sure you get a message at the top saying your comment has been saved. If not, E-mail me your think aloud.

I had a questions about the sentence that contained "..the cows, through some wisdom they were not wise enough to know they possessed, were very wise indeed." Does anyone have any idea what this could mean? How can you be smart without knowing it? Help me out!

On page 7, I could really visualize Winnie banging a stick across the iron bars. Since the book said that she never had a hint of curiousity, I pictured her with a bored face about the age as a 14 year old. I think Natile Babbitt really has a way with words. Every sentence that I read it Tuck Everlasting, she somehow puts a little magic in it!
I had a question on page 6 when it said "'Move on- we don't want you here'" I wondered how a house could say that. I realized later thatit meant more that the author wasdoing personification and it just had a go away sort of feel.
I made a visualization when the touch-me-not cottage was being explained. I could really see an almost overly tidy house that was square and looked as if it was daintily made and almost fragile. I also imagined it in a fairly dark, beautiful forest that was described.
I had an inference on page 7, when it said “There was another reason to leave the wood to itself: it belonged to the Fosters. I inferred that the Fosters weren’t very nice people, and people were afraid to enter the woods because they thought the Fosters would hurt them. It might be that they just don’t want to invade the Foster’s property, but that’s my inference.

I had a prediction at the end of chapter one where it says, "[The Earth] would have trembled on its axis like a beetle on a pin". I think that Winnie will find the brook and that it will be a really important part of the story!!!!!!!!=-)
My question is who's point of view is it from? Is it from a persons point of view? The roads view? And why would this person think that the gallows and jailhouse are so important? Maybe its Jesse's or Miles's point of view.

I had a visuilization on page 6. I could really see the four feet high iron fence that looked like it said "move on- we don't want you here".I could imagine how bad it looked withall of the painfully cut greass around it.
On line 6 page 6 i thought that there was a important part when it said a sqware solid cottoge with a touch me not apperance. It made me think this cottege would be very important.
The think aloud I had was a prediction on page 8. My prediction is that the little spring bubbling up among the roots is what makes the Tuck family stay the same age forever. The reason I think that is because on the back of the book it says, "eternal life after drinking from a magic spring"so I think that is the magic spring they are talking about.

I had a question on page 7 about the fosters. In my head I thought, who where the fosters? What are they like? Are they mean? Nice? These questions still remain unanswered.
I had a question about someting on the middle of the eigth page the quote was "They would have noticed the giant ash tree in the center of the wood and then the little spring beside it. That would have been a disaster so immense that this weary old earth, would have trembled on its axis like a beetle on a pin." Ihad aquestion what would be the disaster? How would it occur? that question seemed to pop right into my head.
I had a question about the title "Tuck Everlasting." What does Tuck Everlasting mean? I haven't found out yet but I think later in the story I will.
I had a visualization on page 6 where it said "Move on-we dont want you here."
I could really visualize a big iron fence with a sign on it saying "Move on-we dont want you here.".In my visualization the fence was rusty and old and the sign was a piece of wood on a string. The sign was broken a little and was a little bit crooked,it looked really old.I could also see the cottage. I imagined it to be yellow with a red roof and a small little porch in front.
Edward Scissorhands
In chapter 1 when she was describing the cottage I could really picture it with it's 4 foot tall iron fence (there she goes again with a motif). By the way she described I'd probably ignore it too.
I had a connection to the text. In chapter 1 the narrator states that"Nothing ever seems interesting when it belongs to you-only when it doesn't" I have had many times that relates to that statement including: In 4th grade there was a toy I really drooled over but a month after owning it I got rather bored of the toy and didn't play with it again for another few months.
I had an inference on page number 6 where it said "...jailhouse and the gallows." My inference was that this book was written a while ago because Mr. Bunting explained to us what a gallow was and he said it was the thing they use to hang you by your neck when you get hung. So i thought that it was a while ago because people almost never get hung anymore. That was my inference I made.

I could visualize the don’t-touch-me cottage. I could see a cottage in the woods that kind of look like the people how lived there didn’t want any body disturbing them. I pictured it kind of like a dark-go-away cottage.
I had a connection when it mentioned the pebbles. My connection is that I collect pebbles near a brook behind my house. Page #6 Connection

On page 7 I had a question about the girl Winnie why was she banging this stick against the bars. I could understand if she did it coming or going some ware but walking around in her own yard?

BASEBALL77:
I had a visualization on page five I visualized the road that had been trod out, I visualized a long dirt road with rocks and stones, with many curves and cow footprints on the road.
I had a connection in the book "nothing ever seems interesting when it belongs to you " this is connected to me because I love to go looking for cool stuff in my grandma's basement but by the time she lets me have it and it is sitting in my basement it is boring> I LOVE THIS BOOK IT IS A GOOD MOVIE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! like
On page 7 I had a visualization of Winnie Foster banging on her fence in the front yard. She looked about 14-15 years old and she was wearing a long flowy white dress with a red ribbon in her brown hair. She looks totally miserable. I could see this really clearly and it seemed like a movie was playing in my head. Natalie Babbit is a great author and she writes everything with so much detail. I can't wait to read more!
i had a connection to the last page when the people would of had to follow the road and i always wanted to follow a road where i did'ent know when it went to
On page in chapter 1, I could visualize the road and in my visualization the dirt road was a golden light brown color with cow-hoove-tracks here and there with short, yellowish-green, grass on the side of the road.
My prediction was that jessie is going to meet winnie and hes going to stop her from running away.
I had a great visualization on page 7 when Winnie was banging a stick across the iron bars.I thought she looked depressed and sad thatshe couldet leave the iron bars, like she was locked in a jail. I also thoguht she looked about 13, long brown hair, and ewas 5 feet tall

Connection
Bigphillip says:I had a connection with the sentence that said: "And all at once the sun was uncomfortably hot, the dust oppressive, and the meager grass along the edges somewhat ragged and forlorn". I know how it feels to have the sun burn on your skin, it is very uncomfortable.
I had a question about why the village didn't matter to the people. I mean they live in it and it gives them everything they need. So why wouldn't the village mean to them?

Good, but how did it help you?
when the book was describing how three things happened and at first there seemed to be no connection, i infered that later they would all be very connected. they all seemed to sort of have a theme of getting lost and going places. it was not like
1)at sun rise, mary set out to town
2) at noonthe ferris wheel at the park broke dowm
3)in the afternoon the school let out
THOSE have no connection. i wonder how the things that DID happen will turn out to be connected.
On page 6, chapter 1, I could visualize the place when it said, "On the left stood the first house, a square and solid cottage with a touch-me-not appearance, surrounded by grass cut painfully to the quick and enclosed by the capable iron fence some four feet high which said.."
