I had a question about the title on the first page. I wondered what "Cowlick" was. I knew it meant hair that stuck up, but what kind of contests could be done on someone's head? I guessed it was a different kind of cowlick and lo, when I read the first page, i found it was.

Good point, Pieman!

I visualized a bunch of lice on someone's head having a contest. It looked very silly but i thought that might be what the story was about. I was wrong.

I had a prediction that when wally came in the story that he was going to do sommething tricky. My question was that did the five people at McGee's Livery stable ever come out,did the five people ever get down from the chuch roof, and did the 5 boys ever get off the bottom of the horse.

Good prediction Ice Cream. Did you notice that at the end of the story it says all the gang ended up in jail.

I could really visualize Hogbone in jail saying "pretty funny" and his gang saying "har har har" and he saying" shut up"
lol i love this story it is halarious

i could visualize the gang coming to the town and all the towns people hiding. no wonder they were called chickens from the gang.

Anonymous said...

I had visualized Hogbone when he said "Wheres all the chickens in this coop?" "Wheres your sissy cheriff and his girlfriends?" Bring'em out so we can shoot 'em for a while!" I pictured Hogbone as a dirty plump man who hasn't showered in days. I pictured him holding his gun and laughing as he said this and his gang laughing with him as he lookedat the eyes peering through cracks.

I had a prediction when Wally came out from beneath ahorse trough. (I also had a question about what a horse trough is) My prediction was that he would save the town with strength and whitI also had visualized him as a big strong man with a gun, but I infered from the picture that he was a boy as I saw that he was much shorter then Hogbone. Also when I saw the picture I started to think Wally was going to trick them out of town.

pacifiereater says: I could visualize what Hogbone's men looked like stuck up on the roof, bolted into the stable and tied to their own horses. these were on all diferent pages. I think that it was very clever of Wally to think of that on what I would think is on short notice.

Anonymous said...

Pacifiereater says: on page 80 I think that Hogbone was not thinking clearly when he took off his gunbelt with his gun and his hat during the hollering contest. if he were actually thinking about the consequences of doing that then I'm sure he probably wouldn't have done that. Hogbone is probably a not really smart person.

I had a question about page 2(page 75). I thought, why were the outlaws names so weird? Later, I guessed that they where from the old west.

Anonymous said...

I could visualize 5 men who all looked really dirty and they all had messed up hair and they were all lined up next to a very small boy who was looked very calm and cool. All the men had determined looks on their faces. I had predicted that Wally was going to win the race and I ended up being wrong. This was on page 75.

Rossumrome says...
When Wally crawled out from under a horse, I inferred that he was a big man and very brave because not that many people would have the courage to stand up to Hogbone and his gang! Later, I found out that I was wrong. Wally was a boy and wasn't as big and strong as I imagined he would be. But I also concluded that Wally was still brave.

Another Think Aloud I have is that I could really visualize the townsfolk coming out to watch. I pictured the townsfolk frightened to come out but their curiosity won over them.

I had a Question on page 1
My Question is what is the contests at cowlick

The contests were a group of contests that were against Hogbones gang. cowlick is the name of the town that the contests were in.

Anonymous said...

My connection is near the end when I noticed everytime Hogbone laughed his gang laughed with him. It reminded me in the Simpsons Mr. Burns 'yes men' who always agreed with him, so Mr. burns was always 'right'. I think Hogbones men are afraid of him so they agree with him all the time,so that he doesn't kick them off the gang and give them to the sheriff.

I visualized on page 2
My visualization is:
I can see wally crawl out from under a horse and standing up in front of everybody
Being just the kid wally was he stood up for his town and out smarted hogbones men.

Purple Green says

On the last page I infered when Hogbone started to holler. I knew from the begining that hollering meant for the police to come and bring Hogbone to jail. That is exactly what happened.

On the second page I predicted when Wally said he was the fastest runner in the town he really meant it. I thought he was big and tough. Later in the story I learned he was not at all and just wanted to trick Hogbone and his gang

Anonymous said...

When wally ssid that he wanted to have a yelling contest I knew right their that wally was pulling another trick. when hogbone yells the sheriff will come back and arest hogbone.

page:1

I could realy visualize part of Hogboan's gang on the roof, the another part trapped in McGee's Livery stable and the other part tied to a horse. this article is very funny.

Anonymous said...

I wondered why the sheriff didn't arrest Hogbones before because the appear to townspeople know him pretty well as a troublemaker. They know not to mess with him and always hide when he comes to town. But it could be that maybe the sheriff is outnumbred and scared of Hogbones

Anonymous said...

I had a pridiction that the BLAM was a gun shot and Hogbones forty-four was a gun.

Another think out loud I have done.

Prediction:

When Wally came into the book I thought that he would do something heroic. Wally saved the town,he tricked Hogboan into going in jail by alimanating his crew.

I infered in the first paragraph of the story that the story took place in the west. I infered that from Hogbone riding on horses with a gang and a sherif in the town.

Anonymous said...

In the third paragraph I had a connection. I once watched a movie called "High Noon" where everybody runs into their houses when a gang of
bad guys come.

One question i had on page 80 was is this guy still not getting it his rival tells him to take off his gun belt and he does they are going to do something bad, is he ever gonna get it? I just think he is not well educated.

I had a prediction on the third page where they were climbing up the ladder. My prediction was that Wally was going to climb up half way and then come down when the other guys were at the top, and take down the ladder. I predicted that because of the other tricks and “contests” that he had did to the other group of guys.

Anonymous said...

One prediction I had on page 76 was that when Wally and the second group of 5 men were climbing to the top of the church, Wally was going to stop climbing halfway up, stop and climb down and knock the ladders down. My prediction was half right because on page 79 it said, then, he walked over to the church and pulled both ladders away, and they slammed to the ground.

HI MR.BUNTING
this is the second think aloud I forgot 2 do
I had a question why are there names like hogbone that are kind of silly. Because they are like gang names like our secret names

Anonymous said...

I had a question about a word on the second page. When Hogbone held up his 44 I did not know what it meant. Then the next word was BLAM! and I knew it was a gun. As it turned out, I was right.

I had a visualization on the last page. When Hogbone started hollering I could picture him as his cheeks turned red and his head tilted back and hollering. I could also picture him looking sort of like a wolf and his look of exhaustion as he was hauled off to jail.

Vid Gorton says

I had a visuilization on page four. could really imagine the look on Hogbones face when he finally realized that Wally had tricked him with all of the contests.

I had a prediction on page two. I thought that when Wally challenged Hogbone's men at a foot race, he would win. I read later on and figured out that I was wrong and that Wally lost.

Anonymous said...

I had an inference on the first page.It is when everybody hollered and the banker hollered loudest.I infered that the banker hollered loudest because he was afraid that Hogbone and his gang would steal the money in the bank.$$.I also had a visualization on the fourth page.It was when Wolly tied Bump to the bottom of his horse.I could really visualize this small boy tieing a huge man to the bottom of a horse and I could also see the townspeople staring at Wolly looping a rope around the guys stomach and saying:
"Now this is how you lift a horse!"
I love this story, its so funny!

When Hogbone and his men rode into town I could really picture a band of tough looking cowboys with pistol,on horses and a tall, tough man with an unshaven chin and a bandana around his neck, who was riding a brown horse who was obviously the leader.

Anonymous said...

When Wally challenged Hogbones men to a ladder climbing challenge, I predicted that he was going to trap the 5 men on the roof of the church and then do another trick to the remaining men(including Hogbone) and I was right except that Wally challenged Hogbone to a 1 on 1 hollering contest.

I inferred on page 74, when Wally said "If you want some trouble, I can give you trouble," that Wally was very brave and would become the hero of the story. Turns out I was right. He tricked Hogbone and his gang, and sent them to jail. Go Wally!

Anonymous said...

On page 78, where it said "Wally his pinto over," I had a question. I didn't know what a pinto was. From the context, I guessed it was a kind of rope.

Unknown said...

Nice work Crabcake. Actuallya Pinto is a small spotted horse, but that didn't really hurt your understanding. A

I could visualize 5 men and Wally getting ready for a race. I can see that they're dirty and sweaty and then men are at least 10 years older then Wally. I see them in a little town with stores that are made out of logs.

I had a Question about the title on page 1.I wondered why there would be a contest at someone’s. I then thought that maybe Cowlick was a rodeo or dance studio, but when I read the first page I found out that "Contests at Cowlick" isn’t on someone’s head or at a dance studio but a town.

I visualized the dusty town "Cowlick" as a big high tech, big wrestling town with a lot of cowlicks everywhere that our stuck in the ground. Later I read that it was actually a little country western town.

Unknown said...

Nice comment, Claire Wodward! A

Great job, Nipmipookook! I'm glad you weren't afraid to be wrong! A

Hi I thought that the contests at cowlick was a great story.
