Chap 5 The Strange Boy in The Wood

What a wonderful chapter. Winnie escapes from her prison briefly and meets a beautiful boy. There is something strange, though. Share your thoughts below.

On page 25 I could visualize Jesse Tuck really well. Natalie Babbitt wrote the sentence really descriptively and I could picture Jesse so well, it was like I was there.

boblee says i had a connection when Winne met Jessie. i thought that it had something to do with the title. I think the Tuck family are the people that live forever.

On page 24 of chapter 5, I could really visualize the wood. Natalie Babbitt used a lot of good descriptive words. I pictured it as a really bright and adventurous wood. I also thought it was really alive since the author said that. I could see Winnie gasping at the sight that she was amazed to see. At that momment, I really wanted to be there!

On page 26-30, I had a few questions that popped into my head in this order: why was the boy drinking the water from the ground? Who was he? Why is there water at the base of the tree? Why doesn't Jesse want Winnie to drink the water? And last of all, Why did Mae Tuck say The worst is happening at last? Maybe these questions will be answered in the next chapter.

In the very beginning of chapter 5 Inoticed my connecction was wrong. The connection I realized that to was in the beginning of each chapter there was the same sort of statement. In this chapter it did not have thisstatement so I predicted it would be some what diffrent. My prediction came true. It was diffrent beceause winnie's story and the Tuck's story crossed and they met.

My think aloud was on pages 26-27. I put a star to say that it was important information. What happened was Winnie saw a boy in the woods. It turned out that it was Jesse Tuck and he was drinking from a spring. I think it was the magic spring that made his family live forever.

On page 28 I had an infrence that Winnie liked jesse untill she found out that he was 17.

I had a question at the end of the 30th page. the quote was "Well boys the worst has come at last." My question was, what was bad about winnie seeing them drinking from the stream? I think you might become EVERLASTING if you drink from the stream. not a normal 17 year old would drink out of a stream for no reason.

On page 28 I had an infrence when Jesse said he was 104 yrs. old then said alright I'm really 17. I bet he was lieing the second time and was really 104 yrs. old. I also think he is one of the elfs that is why he has lived so long.

I had an inference on page 29 when jesse tuck drank the water, I'm guessing that the spring is something important that ties in with the fact that the tucks have looked the same for 87 years.

I had a connection on page 22.
I am sometimes afraid to go alone somewhere too.
Usually im not afraid to go when i know its safe but from the news my dad watches every night,i dont think ill go a lot of places alone for a while!!!

On page 29 I think Jesse refused to give Winnie the stream water because it was 'Everlasting water,' the water that has kept Jesse alive for 104 years.

on page 22 I predicted that every chapter is going to start at a different time of the day

At the very first page of chapter five I made a prediction that Winnie would run away, right she woke up tht morning. I was mostly right becuase she did go into the wood but after much decision.

on the 25th page i could almost see jesse neck to me becase the author described it so well!

Chapter 5 page 22 line 4 I had a prediction/inference when Winnie Foster made up here mind I predicted /infered that she made up here mind to run away. On the next line i found out that my prediction was correct.

I made a prediction that when Jesse didn't want Winnie to drink from the fountian of water. My prediction was that he didn't want her to drink the water from the fountian because it has a magical touch. Like makes you get older or something like that. I made a prediction. Page #29.

I had a "determining what's important" right after Jesse sid he was 104, then said he was really 17. I realized that the difference between 104 and 17 is 87, and it said earlier in the book that the Tucks had looked the same for 87 years! This probably is significant to that. I don't know how, but I'll fd out soon, hopefully.

I had a connection to Winnie when she
walked through the wood and found the toad. She was feeling "Ha! I did it" . I sometimes get that feeling too.

I had a connection on page 28 where it said, “’All right. I’m one hundred and four years old.’” My connection was in 3rd grade my teacher didn’t like to say her real age when we asked, so she would always use the same number, 104. That was the connection I made.

I had a connetion when the book said "Winnie woke up early the next morning" cause I have to wake up at 5:55 every morning and sometimes I forget to turn off my alarm.

page 29 i made a inference that when Jesse drunk the water that was what made him everlasting and that is why he would not let Winnie drink the water.

From the writing I could imagine a little fountain of water spurting up and I could picture Winnie looking though the crack in the bush at the boy sitting against the tree.

On page 25, when the author was describing Jesse, I could visualize him very well. "He was thin and sunburned, this wonderful boy, with a thick mop of curly brown hair, and he wore his battered trousers and loose, grubby shirt with as much self-assurance as if they were silk and satin."
